Preventing Account Fraud
- Protect your accounts. Never lend out your credit or ATM cards or share your passwords with anyone not authorized on your account.
- Report lost or stolen checks or credit cards immediately.
- Never give out financial information over the phone or online unless you initiate the transaction and you know the party you're dealing with.
- Shred unnecessary financial documents including old bank statements, invoices, or unwanted or pre-approved credit offers.
- Take action if regular bills and account statements stop reaching you.
- Never print your social security or driver's license number on your checks.
- Check your monthly statements for accuracy. Don't ignore unusual charges. Call immediately to resolve the discrepancy.
- Check your credit report at least once a year to identify suspicious entries. For a small fee, you can obtain a copy of your credit report from any of the three major credit bureaus:
Equifax: 800-685-1111 or www.equifax.com
Experian: 888-397-3742 or www.experian.com
TransUnion: 800-916-8800 or www.transunion.com
